Pulau Layang-Layang, located approximately 270 km from Labuan and 280 km from Sabah, is part of the Spratly Islands group. Marine Research Station, Layang Layang or MARSAL in short, was established by the Malaysian Fisheries Department in 2004 to conduct scientific research and ecosystem monitoring around the Semarang Peninjau Cluster and was placed under FRI Bintawa.
