Break and Protect (BP2), invented by Dr. Kua Beng Chu is a marine leech (Zeylanicobdella arugamensis) trap that can overcome the problem of marine leech infestation in caged fish, especially grouper. Deaths due to leech infestations have been reported in Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia. In addition to death, marine leeches also implicate serious injuries and secondary infections in fish. If preventive measures are not taken immediately, the infestation will spread and cause death and loss to farmers.

So far, the effectiveness of BP2 has been tested against 14 other farmed fish species including golden pomfret, Asian sea bass, red snapper and cobia. BP2 has been commercialized by a private company, 3 Little Fish Sdn. Bhd. and now is available in the market.

Among the advantages of using BP2 is the reduction of leech infection from 100% to 22% within 15 days and allows fish to be sold alive without wounds (RM35/kg) compared to RM5/head (sale of dead fish with wounds on the body due to leech infestation). BP2 is categorized as a green technology where no chemicals are used for fish treatment. It also reduces operating costs, time and the number of workers because BP2 can be managed by only one worker.
