Enhancing Research Capacity: FRI Acquires Advanced HPLC System for Marine Biotoxin Analysis
Greetings and best wishes,
Alhamdulillah, through the development allocation of Rolling Plan 5 (RP5) 2025 under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12), FRI has successfully acquired several high-tech instruments for its laboratories, specifically at the Impact Assessment Research Centre, FRI Batu Maung. Among the key equipment received is the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system, Shimadzu Nexera LC-40 series.
On 19 to 22 January 2026, a training session regarding the optimization and usage of this equipment was conducted.
Although the HPLC system is capable of analyzing various contaminants (such as antibiotic residues and chemical pollutants), the current primary focus is on the analysis of marine biotoxins, specifically Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP), which is frequently reported in the country.
These efforts are crucial in the Department of Fisheries’ (DOF) commitment to strengthening seafood safety assurance.
