Marine Research Station at Layang Layang (MARSAL)

Pulau Layang-Layang, located approximately 270 km from Labuan and 280 km from Sabah, is part of the Spratly Islands group. Marine Research Station, Layang Layang or MARSAL in short, was established by the Malaysian Fisheries Department in 2004 to conduct scientific research and ecosystem monitoring around the Semarang Peninjau Cluster and was placed under FRI Bintawa.

Research Activities

Study of the distribution of corals, giant clams, and endangered species in the Semarang Peninjau Cluste

Evaluation of sea corals’ growth rat

Expanding the distribution of hard corals throughout the Pulau Layang Layang lagoon

  • Accommodation for 8 people
  • Office building with space for administration, briefing and laboratory for technical work
  • Electricity supply from TLDM
