FRI Tanjung Demong was established in 1984 and initially named Marine Fish/Shrimp Fry Production Centre. In 1986, the name of the centre was replaced to Marine Fish Fry Production Centre to suit the new function which excludes shrimp production. In 1992, the name was again replaced with the Centre for Marine Fish Production and Research following the incorporation of research elements into the functions. Starting in 2021, the name FRI Tanjung Demong was used for standardization with other FRI centres across the country.
