Langkawi Research Centre (PPL) is located at the Bukit Malut Fisheries Complex, Langkawi, Kedah. This centre was established on 20 April 2015 and was initially named the Fisheries Research Institute Langkawi (FRI Langkawi). The setting up of PPL aims to support the aquaculture industry in Langkawi with emphasis on mariculture of sea cucumber and seaweed. In 2022, the PPL was restructured and placed under the FRI Pulau, Kedah.
The main research allocation is acquired from the Department of Fisheries development fund. The PPL Langkawi has three (3) units namely Seaweed Unit, Seaweed Unit and Marine Fish Unit with two (2) research officers and five (5) support staff.
Apart from R&D, PPL is also actively engaged in technology transfer to local target groups and often entertains visitors from various inside and outside agencies due to its location on a famous tourist island in Malaysia.
